Introduction

Engineered CEMA Screw Conveyors 1
Screw conveyors are used in many industries to transport and distribute flowable bulk solids materials. While one of the oldest and simplest means of conveying products, they are compact, versatile and economical. With certain modifications and/or variations in the mechanical arrangement, screws conveyors can be designed to mix, blend, or agitate. In applications where close control of material flow is critical, the screw conveyor may be used as a highly accurate metering device.

Technical Specs

Description

The modular shafted screw conveyor system is highly versatile offering numerous solutions for conveying flowable bulk solids. Shafted screw conveyors are manufactured from mild steel, AR (abrasion-resistant) steel, stainless steel and other alloys, with a suitable surface finishing. They are made up from a U or V-shape trough that is equipped with at least one outlet spout, an end plate at each trough end, helicoid or sectional screw flighting welded on a center pipe bushed at each end, end bearing assemblies complete with shaft sealing unit, a certain number of intermediate hanger bearings depending on the overall length of the screw conveyor, and bolted trough cover sections.

Shafted screw conveyors are equipped with a gear drive that suits the application. Screw feeders or live bottom conveyors with multiple screws in a common housing are available for applications such as bin unloading. Depending on the material to be handled, shafted screw conveyors can be fabricated in a CEMA standard Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 component construction.
Current CEMA standards cover 6”, 9”, 12”, 14”, 16”, 18”, 20” and 24” diameter conveyor sizes with U-trough. Standard shaft sizes are 1-1/2”, 2”, 2-7/16”, 3” and 3-7/16” diameters, with 2-bolt drilling. While other screw sizes, shaft diameters and V-trough (flared) housings are available, there are no established industry standards.

Function

Group 1, light-duty screws are mainly used to convey powders or granular materials such as: grains and grain by-products; flour milling; in animal feed milling and pet food production; in the plastics industry; and in soap, washing powder and detergent processing.

Group 2, medium-heavy-duty screws are mainly used: in animal feed milling; in wood processing; in the chemical industry, and in environmental technology for both municipal and industrial applications.

Group 3, extra-heavy-duty screws are mainly used in the cement / lime /gypsum, sand, as well as in the mining industry.
